River Gallery School:
Nurturing the Artist Within

The River Gallery School is a nonprofit educational organization that offers an in-depth visual arts program for young people and adults. Founded in 1976, the school is based on the belief that each person has artistic and creative capacities which, when nurtured, will find unique and valuable expression. It is our challenge to inspire a love for art, to open the possibility of art as a vital force in a person's life, and to provide the foundation of techniques and skills necessary for artistic growth and expression.

The school is located at 127 Main Street in Brattleboro, and its studios are large and beautifully situated with views over the Connecticut River and Vermont countryside. In all classes there is an emphasis on individual process, creativity and expression employing a variety of media techniques. Projects are developed individually with the instructors, and all materials are provided to encourage freedom to experiment.

A full schedule for adults is offered with both daytime and evening classes available. There are five sessions of studio class each week, and weekly meetings of Life Drawing and Painting, Printmaking, Art and Meditation, Sculpture, and Drawing in Peace. Because all classes are based on individual instruction and dialogue with the instructors, people with all levels of experience, including absolute beginners, are welcome.

Art classes for children are held every afternoon, and there is a homeschoolers class which takes place on Thursday mornings. A highly individualized program provides a unique opportunity to study art in a studio environment with faculty members who are working artists as well as teachers. Instruction is provided in drawing, painting, marbling, and multimedia techniques, as well as monoprinting and sculpture.

Classes are small, and projects which students develop individually with the instructors may be pursued over several weeks, encouraging an in-depth approach and intensity of experience. Students are encouraged to express their real and imaginary worlds in a climate where trust, self-confidence and acceptance may grow. A balance is sought between preserving natural creativity and providing the skills and discipline necessary for deeper expression to unfold.

It is the policy of the school to make it possible for anyone with a sincere interest in attending classes to do so. To this end, the River Gallery School engages in a number of activities and programs to provide scholarships funds. Besides the yearly Benefit Auction held at the end of March and an annual concert, the school runs a very successful Art Rental Program which allows individuals and businesses to rent an original piece of children's art for a year. The entire collection of art from children's classes has now been reframed in colorful frames and matts that make it more attractive and exciting than ever. We have also added many new pieces to the collection which are available for a yearly tax-deductible donation of $100. The Scholarship Fund supported by these and other fundraising activities allows many talented young people and adults in our community to benefit from our art programs.

If you are interested in finding out about our class offerings or about renting a piece of art, please call the River Gallery School at 802-257-1577 or just stop by to visit our gallery and studios. You may also visit us on the Web at www.rivergalleryschool.org.
